Quick answer
What is reranking in RAG?
Reranking is a second retrieval stage. A fast search, using vector similarity and/or keywords, first returns a broad set of candidate chunks (for example the top 50–100). Then a more accurate reranker model, usually a cross-encoder, scores each chunk against the question and keeps only the most relevant few for the LLM.
Does it help?
In Anthropic's published retrieval tests (Sept 2024), combining contextual embeddings and contextual BM25 with reranking cut the retrieval failure rate by 67% (from 5.7% to 1.9%, top-20 chunks), against 49% without reranking.
What does this service include?
Codersarts engineers measure your current retrieval, add a reranker suited to your data, latency and budget, tune how many chunks are retrieved and kept, and deliver a before/after accuracy report. Starter from $99 (2 days), Standard $199 (3 days), Advanced $399 (5 days, with hybrid search, latency and cost tuning).
Is this your problem?
The right document is retrieved, but the answer uses the wrong paragraph
Answers change for questions that mean the same thing
The bot misses exact terms: product codes, names, error messages, clause numbers
You stuff more chunks into the prompt "to be safe", and answers get worse and costlier
Users complain the chatbot is "almost right"
You don't know whether retrieval or the LLM is causing bad answers
Why vector search alone isn't enough
Similarity ≠ relevance. Embedding search finds text that sounds similar, not text that answers the question.
Exact terms get missed. IDs, codes and rare names are often weak in embeddings. Keyword (BM25) search catches them, which is why hybrid search plus reranking is common.
Too much context hurts. The "Lost in the Middle" study (Liu et al., Stanford, published in TACL) found that LLMs use information best when it sits at the beginning or end of the context, and performance drops when the key passage is buried in the middle. Sending fewer, better-ranked chunks helps.
More chunks cost more. Every extra chunk adds tokens, latency and cost on every request.
Reranking fixes the "found it, but used the wrong part" problem without rebuilding your pipeline.
How reranking fits your pipeline
Question
↓
Stage 1 – Recall (fast, broad)
Vector search (+ BM25 keyword search = hybrid) → top 50–100 candidates
↓
Stage 2 – Precision (accurate)
Reranker (cross-encoder / LLM) scores each candidate vs. the question → top 3–10

What we do
Baseline: run your test questions through the current pipeline. Measure retrieval hit rate, answer accuracy and latency.
Diagnose: confirm retrieval is the bottleneck (not chunking, parsing or prompts) and flag other quick wins.
Choose a reranker: hosted (Cohere Rerank, Voyage) or self-hosted (Jina, BGE, other cross-encoders), or an LLM-based reranker, based on accuracy, languages, latency, cost and privacy.
Integrate: add the reranking stage to your code (LangChain, LlamaIndex, Haystack or custom) and vector DB (Pinecone, Weaviate, Qdrant, pgvector, Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, Chroma, Milvus).
Tune: candidate count (top-k), final count (top-n), score thresholds, and the "no good answer" fallback.
Hybrid search (Advanced): add BM25/keyword search and fuse the results before reranking.
Measure: a before/after report on accuracy, latency and cost per query.
Hand over: code changes, config and a tuning guide.

Which reranker? (guide)
Option | Type | Best for |
Cohere Rerank | Hosted API | Strong general default, multilingual, no infrastructure |
Voyage Rerank | Hosted API | General use, plus domain options (e.g. code, legal) |
Jina Reranker | Open-weight / API | Low latency self-hosting, long documents |
BGE Reranker (v2-m3) | Open-source | Lightweight, multilingual, fully private |
LLM reranker | Your LLM | Complex relevance judgments; higher cost and latency |
Independent comparisons find hosted rerankers add roughly 0.6 seconds of network latency per call, while self-hosted models on a GPU can run in about 0.2 seconds (Particula, 2026). Public benchmark rankings often don't transfer to your documents, so we compare candidates on your own questions before choosing.
What results to expect
Higher retrieval hit rate: the right passage is ranked into the top results more often. Anthropic's tests showed the largest gains when reranking was combined with contextual embeddings and BM25.
More consistent answers for similar questions.
Fewer chunks in the prompt, so lower token cost and often faster LLM responses.
Clear evidence: a before/after report on your questions, not generic benchmark claims.
Exact gains depend on your data, chunking and questions. We measure rather than promise.

FAQ
What is reranking in RAG? Reranking is a second stage after initial retrieval. A reranker model scores each candidate chunk against the question and keeps only the most relevant ones for the LLM, which improves answer accuracy.
How much does it cost to add reranking? From $99 with one reranker and a 20-question before/after test. Standard ($199) compares two rerankers and tunes settings on 50 questions. Advanced ($399) adds hybrid search, latency and cost tuning, and a 100-question report.
How much does reranking improve accuracy? It depends on your data. In Anthropic's published tests, adding reranking to contextual embeddings and BM25 reduced retrieval failures by 67%, against 49% without it. We measure the actual gain on your questions.
Will reranking slow down my chatbot? It adds a step. Hosted rerankers typically add a fraction of a second, and self-hosted ones can be faster. Because fewer chunks go to the LLM, overall response time often stays similar. We tune for your latency budget.
Which reranker should I use? Cohere Rerank is a strong hosted default. Voyage offers domain options. Jina and BGE suit self-hosting and privacy. We compare options on your own questions before choosing.
Do I need to rebuild my RAG system? No. Reranking plugs into your existing pipeline and vector database.
What is hybrid search, and do I need it? Hybrid search combines vector (semantic) and keyword (BM25) search. It helps when users search exact terms such as codes, names or IDs. It's included in Advanced, or available as an add-on.
Can the reranker run privately? Yes. Open models like BGE or Jina can run on your own servers, so no data leaves your environment.
What if reranking isn't the real problem? The baseline step checks that. If the issue is chunking, PDF parsing or prompts, we tell you and recommend the right task.
Do you work with LangChain and LlamaIndex? Yes, plus Haystack, custom pipelines, and vector databases including Pinecone, Weaviate, Qdrant, pgvector, Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, Chroma and Milvus.
